"Maturity level, poise, intelligence, and she's a sweet girl," said Jean McPherson, coordinator of the Miss Northwest Professional Rodeo Association of 2007 winner Cassie Sanders of Prineville. "And she rides well." Sanders, 20, also the 2006 Crooked River Roundup Queen, competed against nine other women ages 18-25. Miss Northwest Professional Rodeo Association is a multi-state title. It covers Oregon, Washington, parts of Idaho, and parts of California. "It's a very big title," McPherson said. A panel of four judges evaluates the contestants on horsemanship, personality, appearance, speech and knowledge. "They start in the morning by doing a horsemanship pattern," explained McPherson. "Then they did a personal interview where they were asked personality questions, current event questions and rodeo questions. They were also given a rodeo and horsemanship knowledge written test." Participants modeled, recited a prepared speech concerning what they could do for the NPRA, and participated in a mock TV interview as well. "The girls really enjoy that," McPherson said. "We have a reporter type person, and they do it like an interview for TV - which is really a good way to look at the girls because that is (a way) to check and see how their conversational skills are in a real life type situation." McPherson, also president of Miss Rodeo Oregon, said all contestants were wonderful but Sanders stood out. "I think they (the judges) were very impressed with her poise," she said. "She had good knowledge and is an excellent horsewoman." |
