Local readers capture love of books in photographs

Children and books, pets and books and the joy of reading were highlighted recently in the Crook County Library's "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words" Photo Contest.
The three winners were Susan Swan (children and books), Jeff and Nicole MacDonald (pets and books) and AnneMarie Knepper (the joy of reading).
The judges were The Friends of the Library and each winner received a $10 gift certificate from "Chapters," the Friends of the Library Gift Shop.
"Obviously there was a universal theme of children and books. The two just seem to go together," said library Public Relations Coordinator Margo Ashcraft.
The photos are showcased at the library by the front desk.
"I've been noticing the last couple of days people still looking at those photos and so I think it just struck a chord with people," Ashcraft said.
This event is the latest in a series of activities commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Crook County Library.
"We wanted people to notice how much reading we do in our daily lives," she said. "We take it for granted. Even if you don't read for pleasure, we read all day. From reading the cereal box at breakfast, to reading signs, menus, directions, advertisements, and the newspaper, reading is pervasive."
Assistant Library Director Cheryl Hancock said "several people gave us photos from their past and so they were connected with family."
Others submitted photos of their pets and books.
"And I think it showed how much reading influences their lives when you saw it from those different angles," Hancock said.
It's continuing to be a quite busy year at the library, with all of the commemorative events.
"First, we won the Million Page Challenge," Ashcraft said. "Then we highlighted reading with photographs. Next a popular Oregon author will visit. I think we have shown that the joy of reading is alive and well in Crook County."
