The Crook County High School NJROTC hosted the first ever Cascades Mountains League Championships on Saturday, finishing first out of nine teams in their final competition of the year.
"We did amazing," said Commander Gilbert Phillips. "I thought that it was actually our best competition of the year. We rose to the occasion and it was phenomenal as usual."
Crook County finished with 40 points to 36 by runner-up North Salem. Rounding out the top five teams were Walla Walla, Wash., with 16 points, Mountain View with 12, and Rogers-USAF with 12.
The Cowboys won the armed and unarmed drill team competitions as well as color guard two, and were to North Salem in armed color guard one. Roberto Iriche was first in individual armed soloist, and the team of Brian Miller and Mike Coffman were first in the armed duo competition. Anthony Smith finished second out of 24 competitors in the individual drill down competition, and the marksmanship team placed third, while Kaleb Jurgens, Jarren Bobillot, Jared Herbert, and Dustin Russell were second through fifth in individual marksmanship.
"All of the armed competition was just amazing," said Phillips. "We pulled together and just did an awesome job. Everybody's focus was there, and the teamwork and the timing were just perfect."
This is the eighth time in the last nine years that CCHS, under the leadership of Masterchief Donny Jackson, has won their district championship.
"We did an awesome job, and I was thoroughly impressed with everybody that competed," said Phillips.
