Last Friday, the Central Oregonian featured a story about a family that was "one paycheck away" from being homeless. Since then, the reader response to this story has been overwhelming to say the least. As of Tuesday morning, 13 groups or individuals have contacted the newspaper with offers of help for the family featured in the front-page story. Some donated cash, others offered food, clothes, and in a couple of cases, snow tires. I think it is safe to say that all of us here at the Central Oregonian were touched by this outpouring of generosity. It is an illustration of how giving this community can be - especially during the holiday season. Of course, the need always seems to exceed the giving. And with that in mind, I hope that everyone takes the time to contribute something to one of the many organizations who help provide for the less fortunate residents of our community. In addition to programs such as the Crook County Holiday Partnership, there are several other groups and organizations that need your support. I encourage you to choose one and do your part. I have often told people that the reason I bought a home here in Prineville is because I love the town and the people in it. This story beautifully illustrates my point. |
