With the Thanksgiving holiday just a few days around the corner, families in Crook County are in full swing trying to prepare for the event. The food, the accomadations and the travel all need to be thought about ahead of time. We ask the people of Crook County who will be with loved ones next weekend to also think about those who are less fortunate. It is Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, and there are more than 200 residents in unstable living situations. Marcella and Joe Edmonds are doing what they can to spur awareness on the problem, but they can only do so much. The Awareness Week could not come at a more poignant time, and it is important for those who can to volunteer their time, not just this Thanksgiving holiday, but whenever there is time available. Even if you don't have time, helping out someone this holiday season is as simple as dropping off non-perishable food at St. Vincent de Paul. As always, we applaud the efforts of the volunteers at the Boys & Girls Club in preparation of their free Thanksgiving dinner. As Club Director Carol Parker points out, "One of the things we try to teach the kids is how important it is to be a supporter of the community. Not just a recipient, but a giver." This lesson can be taught to everyone. Be a giver this holiday season. Crook County may be small, but it has a big heart. |
