| Crook County schools showing their age

"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." Benjamin Franklin With the release of a report on the state of Crook County schools, three were recommended to be replaced. The architectural firm of Dull Olson Weekes Architects Inc., cited several reasons for recommending that Ochoco Elementary School, Crooked River Elementary School, and Powell Butte Elementary School be replaced, but their recommendation should come as no surprise to anyone. The ever-increasing age of these schools combined with the county's ever-increasing growth has made the future of these schools an utmost certainty. While there is the possibility that they could be sold and eventually used for a purpose other than a school, the day will come when it will be more economically feasible to replace these schools rather than continue to upgrade them. For example, to make only the critical improvements that were recommended at Crooked River Elementary the district is looking at a $2.58 million price tag. To make all of the recommended improvements, the total jumps to $4.63 million. And when the improvements would be finished, the district would still have a school that is nearly 70 years old. We are not advocating any particular course of action at this time, but rather hoping that the voters of Crook County realize that within the next five years, they will most likely be asked to reach into their pocketbooks for money to pay for new school buildings. It's as certain as death and taxes. |
