| By Chad Richins The first Miss Crook County, Katie Syme, is counting down the days until the Miss Oregon pageant in Seaside on July 13. On July 7 she will join 21 other contestants in Seaside for a week of preparation and competition leading up to the final show. Christy Hartman, the Miss Crook County pageant director, has been helping Katie prepare and getting her to events such as last month's pre-pageant event when all the contestants for Miss Oregon were invited to Nordstrom's in Portland where they were told what to expect during the pageant and what was expected of them. Miss America, and former Miss Oregon, Katie Harman of Gresham made a surprise visit to the event and spent the day with the contestants who wore matching t-shirts while they tried out make-up and later visited a children's hospital. In addition to sharing the same first name, Syme and Harman share a striking resemblance that is very evident in a picture they took side-by-side at Nordstrom's. "I got to eat dinner with her," Syme said, "and talk with her for about a half an hour." In preparation for the contest, Syme has been spending most of her time on the interview portion which is worth 50 percent of the total score for the pageant. She logs onto the Internet every day to keep up on current events and to research her platform, which is music education. Syme has also been spending a lot of time on the talent portion of the contest. "I've been practicing (the piano) a lot. It has to be memorized and it's two minutes long." When asked about how she feels about the upcoming contest, Syme said, "It's an honor to just have Crook County in the pageant and represent them." As a representative of the region, Syme will carry a basket to be auctioned off for charity containing items unique to Crook County and Central Oregon. Anyone wishing to contribute items or ideas can contact Christy Hartman at (541)447-5669. About Miss Crook County's chances in the big event, Hartman said,"I've met all the other girls in this contest, and I think Katie has just as good a shot as anybody. We could definitely have the next Miss Oregon right here in Prineville." Local supporters of Miss Crook County who are traveling to Seaside for the Miss Oregon pageant include Judy Walsh, Jvon Dansforth and, of course, the Syme family. When it is all over, win or lose, Katie Syme plans to continue her education, having been accepted to Oregon State University and Belmont University, a prestigious music school in Tennessee. |
