Choose leaders for the future of our state
By Chad Richins

In the midst of the current economic and political situation, the voters of Oregon should take a long hard look at the candidates that are asking for their vote.
It takes a special kind of person to be an effective legislator or councilman, just as it takes a certain kind of person to run a successful business. It is hard to find someone to help govern who respects public opinion and the interests of their constituency without pandering or worrying about pleasing everyone.
The people we elect to make choices for us should make choices, not just let problems roll by and hope someone else will fix them.
The current state budget crisis is an example of how not to run a business. The current legislature is like a babysitter who lets the kids eat everything in the house while the parents are gone, afraid to be too strict and wanting the children to like them too much. We need people in government who can say no. Or, NO!
When the voters say, we want lower taxes and more services, the legislature should say, NO!
When the public wants to pass initiatives that are bad policy, the government should pass good legislation that addresses the issue.
To see our way out of the current financial mess, we need leaders. We need the best and brightest of our time to step forward and lead us in a direction that will benefit Oregon in the long run. We don't need someone holding our hand and asking which way we want to go. Yes, we have to give our consent, but we don't have to lead by committee.
Right now we need to choose leaders and vote on measures with a mind to the future. The current economic downturn is already looking up, so we need to think about hiring leaders who will put some of that tax money away during boom times, knowing that the next down cycle will eventually come.
We can't run a state with as many differing interests as Oregon without looking to the future and making solid economic choices now.
