Measure 27 is simply bad legislation
By Vance W. Tong

While we support truth in advertising and promotion, we feel the intent behind Measure 27 has become skewed.
If approved, Measure 27 would require the labeling of foods derived from or processed using genetically-engineered materials with a label prepared by the Oregon Department of Agriculture.
According to Jim Peterson, a researcher at Oregon State University, the definition of this measure is so broad that it could conceivably encompass nearly every type of crop developed through cross-breeding programs.
He went on to say that the measure also lists practices used in traditional plant-breeding programs that can occur in nature and aren't classified as genetic modification anywhere else.
The intent behind the measure probably isn't a bad one.
Requiring accurate labeling of food would provide the discriminating consumer with good information about their food.
Unfortunately, this is an ambiguously-worded measure that would only further complicate the agriculture industry in Oregon.
We encourage you to vote 'No' on Measure 27.
