Support Vector Control District expansion
By Bill Schaffer

We should support expansion of Vector Control District.
It is amazing how much havoc a little creature like the mosquito can raise.
Whether it's the annoyance of them attacking when you go outside, having one in your bedroom at night or the suffering caused by an itchy bite, mosquitoes are an annoying problem.
The Crook County Vector Control (CCVCD) has done a good job keeping the population of these pests down over the years, but that job gets harder as the City of Prineville expands its boundaries and takes away CCVCD county land that has been taxed to pay for the mosquito control.
As a result the CCVCD operating revenues have shrunk to the point where they may have to cut services. In an effort to maintain or increase the current level of services the organization has asked the Prineville City Council to be included directly in the Vector Control District.
In November city voters will be asked if they want to become part of the district, which will increase their taxes by .173 cents per thousand dollars of the assessed value of their homes. With a typical home valued in the neighborhood of $100,000 that would only increase city taxes by $17.30 per year.
At the same time, the county residents in the vector control district will be asked if they want Prineville to be included in the district. If that is approved county residents will have their assessment cut from the current .2114 cents per $1,000 assessed value to the same .173 rate proposed for the city.
The increased revenue will allow the CCVCD to continue the mosquito abatement program and work to remove breeding sites around the city.
We encourage both city and county residents to vote to expand the district to include the City of Prineville so this organization can keep the mosquito population under control.
