What? No bodyguards?
Mayor’s job generates a variety of questions, issues

Mike Wendel is the mayor of Prineville. He can be reached at 447-5627.

This time as I continue my education piece about the mayor's position, I must answer a few questions from some children that I visited with recently from Crooked River Elementary School.
No, I do not live at city hall - even though sometimes it feels like it.
   No, I am not rich!
No, I do not have a Cadillac for everyday of the week.
   And a personal favorite,
No, I do not have bodyguards.
One of the greatest things I get to do is help people in the community with problems. For example, I had a lady talk to me about the kids driving through her alley too fast during the high school lunch break. Another lady was concerned about kids being able to walk safely to and from the high school and middle school. We were able to resolve both of these issues. I believe that being responsive to issues in the community is a large part of local government.
Let's get on with some updates from within the city. First off, our railroad just got a big shot in the arm in the form of about 500-600 cars a year from Les Schwab. We have also been able to negotiate with a local mill for another 100 cars a year with a possibility of even more than that. I am going out on a limb to say that I believe we could haul as many as 1,000 cars this year.
Moving on to other issues, I am excited to tell you that after having several meetings with the local business owners and the chamber board, the Prineville-Crook County Chamber of Commerce has formed a committee to help fight the drug problem in our community. They will be starting an education program for local businesses, hoping to move in to pre-screening and maybe even random drug testing. I would like to commend all of the businesses that are involved in making a safer work environment and a safer community. Our local businesses are the best!
Keep up the good work Prineville. Remember we are all in this together, and I am happy to serve you.
