The start of a proud tradition
Crook County High School begins the Alumni Hall of Fame

Ninety-nine years ago, the first graduating class from Crook County High School completed four years of instruction. Five women (Beulah Crooks, Elsie Osborn, Celia Nelms, Clara Horney, and Edna Estes) and four men (Arthur Linborg, Orrin Mills, Reuben Jr. and Luther Moore) comprised that first class. The new brick high school had been completed four years prior and made Prineville one of only a handful of communities that could boast of having its own high school. Students from outlying communities such as Bend, Redmond, Madras, and the various remote ranches in the Paulina area had to board with families in Prineville to attend the school (information from "Prineville" by Steven Lent, 2006).
Last Friday night, 207 students of the Class of 2007 graduated from the Crook County School District in a ceremony that has not changed much in the last 100 years. However, the world our graduates are facing certainly has changed. Over time the schools and curriculum have changed to meet the needs the students face in the changing world post high school.
There have been many distinguished graduates from Crook County High School over the past 99 years that have used their core academic learning and co-curricular experiences at CCHS as the basic building blocks to further their education and make a significant contribution in the world.
This year Crook County High School has started a program to honor such individuals and inducted the first five alumni into the CCHS Alumni Hall of Fame. Three of those individuals were able to be in attendance at the graduation ceremony on Friday night and shake the hands of each 2007 graduate crossing the stage to receive their diploma. The other two very much wanted to attend but had commitments they could not rearrange. All five have had inspirational lives and a similar message to students: get as much education as you can after high school and maintain your trustworthiness and integrity. Their presence was an inspiration to all of us.
The first group included in the CCHS Alumni Hall of Fame was:
Mel Feeney, Class of 1982: Dr. Feeny received an A.B. and Ph.D. from Harvard and her M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is a professor at Harvard Medical School and is a leading researcher specializing in neuropathy, neurology, dystonia and Parkinson's disease.
Alfred "Ted" Goodwin, Class of 1940: Judge Goodwin completed his B.A. in Journalism and Ph.D. in Jurisprudence at University of Oregon. After serving as a circuit court judge and retiring as a Lt. Col. from the JAG Command of the US Army Reserve, he continues to serve as a senior judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Linda Sharp, Class of 1959: After completing her B.S. in Nursing for the U of O School of Nursing, Linda has served 38 years as a Nurse Practitioner, Mid-wife, Nurse Anesthetist, Administrator of a Mission Hospital, and Director of an Out-Patient Clinic in Cote d'Ivoire, Africa.
Stuart "John" Shelk, Class of 1962: After completing his B.A. at Willamette University and serving in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in Germany and Viet Nam, John has spent his working years at Ochoco Lumber Company whose operations span from central and eastern Oregon to Europe. John is the Managing Director of the company.
Craig Woodward, Class of 1965: After completing his B.S. in Business at Eastern Oregon, Craig is the President and owner of Woodard Companies with operations in North America, Central America, and South America.
