The first Miss Crook County, yet to be identified, is among the half a dozen high school girls getting ready for the pageant scheduled for April 13. In its first year in this community, the event is geared toward providing scholarships to eligible high school students age 17 and up headed for college. Competition is also open to college students up to 24 years of age. For those who make it through the local level, scholarships are also awarded at the state and national levels of the competition. Qualifying factors for young women who desire to be a part of this competition include talent and the ability to speak intelligently, and with poise. The Miss America Organization is one of the largest, most effective scholarship programs for American women in the world. It alone provides $30 million annually in scholarship assistance. Organizers Christy Hartman and Dawn Reeher are eager to gain sponsors for this year's program. They are also currently in the process of signing up five judges from outside the community, to help select Miss Crook County for the April 13 event. Volunteers are needed to help coordinate the actual event, and to act as mentors for the young women. To learn more, to volunteer time or to become a sponsor call 416-6900, ext. 1095. |
