 | | | Vin Diesel holds his own in the James Bond-type XXX. |
| By David Richards Grade: B+ If it weren't for the presence of Vin Diesel, XXX probably wouldn't go very far. With his intimidating stature and raspy voice, the star from The Fast and the Furious and Boiler Room turns this James Bond ripoff into two hours of rip-roaring entertainment. XXX has so many elements of a Bond film, that it wouldn't surprise me if director Rob Cohen aimed to do with his film what Weird Al Yankovic does with his songs. Diesel stars as Xander Cage, a name almost as fearful sounding as Vin Diesel. Cage is an outlaw of some sorts. He likes to run from the law and isn't afraid. He lives his life on the edge, finding adventure in stunts like jumping off of bridges. Cage continues on with that walk of life, though, until he meets a high-level agent named Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) who blackmails him. Cage has no choice, he either works for the government or goes to the slammer for his extreme stunts. Cage agrees, and heads off to find a band of European bad guys, led by the slick leader named by Yorgi (Marton Csokas), while at the same time smoozing with an attractive, but dangerous female (Asia Argento). There's something to like about Vin Diesel. He can hold his own on the big screen and does well. The mere fact that he stars in the film helps take away from some of the worthless aspects of it. I've heard better dialogue, for instance, on Sponge Bob Square Pants and I've seen better stunts performed on Blues Clues. Other than those flaws, XXX is a proven winner. ****Rated PG-13 for violence, non-stop action sequences, sensuality, drug content and language. |
