Men in Black II review by David Richards

Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith come back for Men in Black II
By David Richards
Grade: C-
It's funny how some movies produce watchable sequels, while others do not.
Rocky was good for another one because boxing never seems to go out of style.
There will always be more than enough interest for another James Bond or Star Wars and just enough for one more go around on Star Trek.
On the other side of the spectrum, there are those sequels that should have stopped at one.
Why another Halloween movie opens this week is beyond me.
I'd rather watch the entire 4 hours and 3 minutes of Cleopatra, thank you very much.
Men in Black II falls more into that Who Cares? division. What was a good idea in 1997, when alien comedies were new and fresh, now is simply old material, stuff that's just not funny anymore.
While the second MIB gives us plenty of eye-popping special effects, there's just not enough of the Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones chemistry that embodied the first one.
There's a bit more plot in Men in Black II, though.
Jay (Smith), the black-suit-wearing secret agent who fights aliens, is having problems keeping partners ever since his main man Kay's (Jones) memory was neuralized at the end of the first one.
Kay's old nemesis Serleena, a modern version of Medusa and played by Lara Flynn Boyle, has resurfaced and is eager to find a shiny tinker toy-type object that only Kay knows the whereabouts to.
To make the long story short, Jay must find Kay (finds him working in a post office) and the two must reunite to join forces against the villain and the rest of the colorful array of aliens.
There are a couple of funny gags in this one. One scene that steals the show involves the alien dog from the first installment. The cute little mutt hangs its head out a car window and in a raspy voice breaks into its own version of "I Will Survive."
Smith and Jones do about as well as they can in a movie that really lacks the spunk of the original.
For diehard fans, this could be doable.
For everyone else, fire up the popcorn popper. You're better off renting Cleopatra.
**** Men in Black II is rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence and some provactive humor.
Go to top.
