Prineville police continue search for assault suspect
Woman reports being assaulted early Saturday morning
By Kevin Gaboury
Prineville Police are looking for a male suspect who assaulted a 32-year-old Prineville woman while she was walking on the bike path along Ochoco Creek near Deer Street early Saturday morning.
The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s, small to medium build, with short hair or possibly bald. Due to the time of the attack, the victim didn't get a good look at his face, said Prineville Police Detective Laura Nelson. His name may be Chris.
"She thought she recalled that he referred to himself as Chris or she remembered his name was Chris," Nelsonsaid. "She doesn't think she ever knew him unless she met him just prior to the assault."
Between the hours of 2:30 and 3:45 Saturday morning, the victim was walking home from the bar when she was approached by the suspect. Shortly after they met, he began hitting her for no apparent reason. She received injuries to her head and face and was transported to Pioneer Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released. The injuries were not life-threatening.
"We don't have any proof that there was a sexual assault, and she doesn't recall that a sexual assault happened," Nelson said. "But she did have multiple bruises and bumps all over her head and a bruise mark on the inside of her arm."
This is the second assault in Prineville in less than a year after a young woman was attacked near Ward Rhoden Staduim last November. Nelson says that case is still open, but the two are most likely not connected due to the different descriptions of suspects.
She added the police department has received a few leads, but doesn't have a particular person of interest yet.
"We've had a few developments, a couple of tips called in, so I'm in the process of weeding those out and doing some more interviews," Nelson said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Prineville Police Department at 447-4168.
