Royce “Dean” Dean

Royce Lenard Dean, of La Pine (formerly of Prineville), passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012. He was 89 years old.

No services will be held, per Royces request. The family will host a private gathering in the summertime.

Royce was born July 17, 1922, in Maysville, Okla., to Osker and Katie (Williams) Dean.

He was with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) for six years, operating heavy equipment while building roads.

Royce proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a head cook on board the ships, and enjoyed baking for the troops on board and off ship.

He worked as an orchard farmer in California, and later started a berry farm in Gresham, Ore. After farming, he went to work as a baker until his retirement in 1981.

He married Naomi Frances McReynolds on March 23, 1951, in Stevenson, Wash.

Royce enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing, camping, hunting, and barbecuing.

Royce was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters, and his daughter, Lynne Marie.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi; his sons, Michael (wife, Deborah) of La Pine, and Doug (wife, Mary) of La Grande, Ore.; step-daughter, Melody (husband, John) Kehres; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
