Thanksgiving Thoughts

Writing a column is a real privilege, and since yesterday was Thanksgiving Day it seems reasonable to say something about that today.
For the first time since I have been married we celebrated Thanksgiving at our house yesterday. And I have to tell you there is a lot to be thankful for.
This has been a wonderful year. Becoming a sports writer has been an interesting experience. People have been amazingly nice, putting up with my mistakes, and providing me with tips and information. It has been a great experience, and I am very thankful to all of the people out there who have been so kind to me.
It has been a joy to watch the sportsmanship and class exhibited by many of the Crook County athletes and coaches that I have had the opportunity to watch and interact with. The community has much to be proud of.
I'm thankful that my son-in-law made it back safely from Iraq to Texas this week. I'm thankful for the freedom we have in the United States, and I'm very thankful for family.
Yesterday was a nice break from the daily grind. Studies show that the average American eats 5,000 calories on Thanksgiving Day, and I know that I did my part to keep that statistic accurate. For anyone who is unsure what that really means, we all just gained more than a pound in one day. To lose that pound will require at least three hours of exercise, but I'm sure that it was worth it.
In the sports world there has been a lot to enjoy this year. Since I have been working here Howie Mole has won a national championship in high school rodeo. Michelly Foley has won a state title in cross country, and the volleyball team has repeated as state champions.
Watching Jacoby Ellsbury, from Madras, burst on the scene and contribute to the Red Sox's world championship was great, and for those of you that haven't heard yet the University of Oregon is the national champion in men's cross country.
I am eagerly looking forward to the winter sports season. Crook County has been a powerhouse in wrestling for years, and I finally get to watch them compete. The girls' basketball team is planning on playing a brand of basketball that should be exciting and fun to watch, and the boys' team is loaded with talent. It should be a fun season.
I think that I must be one of the luckiest people alive. To think that I get paid to watch sports.

Go to top.
