It's standard editorial policy here at the Central Oregonian to check the name of every person who submits a letter to the editor.
Even frequent letter writers get a phone call from us just so we can make sure that they actually wrote the letter.
Some people might view this as a sign that we don't trust letter writers. On the contrary, we would love to implicity trust everyone who decides to send us their thoughts. However, it is those few people who abuse this trust who cause us to perform these identity checks.
This week alone, we received not one, but two letters that turned out to be falsely signed. Consequently, they were not - and will not - be printed.
So, as you can see, a few rotten apples force us to check all the letters.
We encourage letters to the editor and do our best to print them as completely as we can. All we ask is that you're honest about your identity.
