guest editorial Norm Borgaard member, Crook County Fair Board On March 20th, Crook County Fair Board meeting was hosted by The Stafford Inn. County Court, along with many other members of the community were also in attendance. The attendees represented a mix of business and civic leaders, as well as the Chamber of Commerce. The Fair Board informed the attendees of their wants, wishes and desires for improving the fairgrounds property to make it a more desirable destination for event promoters. The meeting was very productive involving open discussion among the Fair Board and the attendees. An important step in the continuation of developing the Fairgrounds as a community center was furthered by the Court's approval of siting the proposed construction for the Prineville Boys' and Girls' Club. This will likely consist of a 40 x 120 foot clubhouse facility, and a 80 x 120 foot gymnasium. The proceeds for this construction are being contributed through the Boys' and Girls' Club. In addition to the projected Boys' and Girls' Club building, the Fair Board were presented the preliminary blueprint for the construction of the new 4-H clubhouse. The Fair Board approved siting the building on a site just off Lynn Blvd. Prior to county fair, a newly landscaped entrance is expected to be completed on the south main entrance that will include a new rock-berm waterfall. The placement and dedication of the new soon-to-be flagpole monument is also expected to be completed prior to county fair. This project is being funded by a fund raising project involving displaying antiquity buildings of Crook County and by their sponsorship. This monument will be on the major concourse leading to the Fairgrounds. Also being considered at this time, is the placement of 20 lamp posts along the main concourse. The funding of these lamp posts, may be under individual sponsorship. The cost of these sponsorships will be approximately $1,000 apiece. A distribution list of the past ten years of capital improvements on the property was made by the Fair Board. Included with this inventory of accomplishments was also a list of future improvements desired. The amount of improvements and projected accomplishments range from $9,630,300 to $13,630,300. The Fair Board's vision plan is being updated and revised each year to continue progress of these projected improvements. A newly formed advisory committee is now supporting the Fair Board in these endeavors. Sheryl Rhoden, Brett Nelson and Mark Stafford, as well as others are being instrumental in this effort. A follow up walk through of the fairgounds and prioritizing some goals will be held on March 26th at 3:30 p.m. This committee is open to the public to participate in assisting the Fair Board in attaining these projected goals. Another very important change was adopted by the Fair Board, to move from a five member Board to a seven member board. Applications are available and may be obtained from the office of the County Court at 300 E. Third Street. The ultimate goal of the Fair Board is to work as a team with the community to continue developing the Fairgrounds as a community center to become a vital asset to every business and individual in Crook County. |
