| By Lon Austin The Crook County High School girls tennis team had a good first day at the district tournament in The Dalles on Monday. The Cowgirls have lost one doubles team and two singles players from the tournament, but the remainder of their team is still alive going into the final rounds of the tournament today. Leading the way for the Cowgirls is freshman Erin Crofcheck, who surprised everyone and has advanced to the championship semifinal round today guaranteeing, herself a spot in the state playoffs next week in Portland. "Little Crofcheck never ceases to amaze me," said Head Coach Lloyd Rodgers. "She won three, three-hour, three-set matches. She's got some guts. She just dug down and she is physically totally exhausted, but she is guaranteed at least fourth place out of 32 people in the district." In other singles matches Tessa Romine won her first round match before being defeated in the second round to be eliminated from the tournament. Natalie Rich lost a tough three-set match in the first round and is still alive in the consolation bracket. Cecile Suhr won her first round match and then was eliminated in the second round when she lost a close three-set match. In doubles play Krissi Kemper and Katie Leavitt won their first two matches and then lost a three-set match in the quarterfinals and will be playing today for fifth and sixth place. The number two doubles team of Maggie Trinchieri and Cassie Low lost 705 in the third set of their first round match to drop to the consolation round where they are still alive. Number three doubles team Kristi Robinson and Chelsea Finnerin also lost in the first round and are still playing in the consolation round. The final Cowgirls doubles team of Megan Bernard and Hayley Harper won their first round match and then fell in the second round, eliminating them from the tournament. As of press time no team scores were available, but Rodgers noted that he was pleased with the team's performance. "We have all of our kids still playing except for three," said Rodgers. "We are doing well so far, but Tuesday will tell the tale." |
