The Crook County High School boys golf team had their final tune-ups before district this week, finishing seventh in a pair of tournaments.
On Monday, the Cowboys shot a 363 at the 11-team Seaside Invitational to earn a seventh-place finish. Matt York led the Cowboy effort, shooting a 90, while Jake Shinkle shot a 91. Caleb Henry shot a 93 and Daniel Teater rounded out the Cowboy's scoring with a 94.
"It was a nice course, but the wind was just howling," said Head Coach Chuck Wilcox. "It was probably blowing 35-40 miles an hour and we typically don't play that well in wind, so I was not dissatisfied with how we played. We didn't shoot too badly for the wind conditions."
On Thursday, Crook County hosted their lone home match of the season and Wilcox was less satisfied with the results.
Summit High School won the tournament, shooting a 300, while Pendleton was second with 308 and West Albany finished third, shooting a 309. The Cowboys finished seventh with a 370.
"I'm going to be honest with you, I'm a little disappointed with our scoring on our own home course," said Wilcox. "We should have beaten most of the teams here. I seriously thought that we should have shot in the 330s today because typically in qualifying we shoot in the low 340s here. I was thinking four scores in the 80s."
Shinkle led the Cowboys on the day, shooting an 86, while Henry finished with a 93 and York shot a 94. Seth Hullet finished the team's scoring with a 97 while Jared George shot a 98.
"I think Shinkle had a decent day," Wilcox said. "He has been struggling the last couple of tournaments, so that was a good score for him. I think we just didn't play the course very smart."
The Cowboys travel to Hermiston to play in the district tournament on Monday and Tuesday. Summit, Pendleton and Bend are the favorites, but Wilcox says not to count Hermiston out, as they are playing on their home course.
"We need to refocus because we've got district coming up," Wilcox said. "We've got a tough league so we are just trying to improve and gain on next year. We would like to finish in the middle of the pack and build for next year." |
