| Cowgirl tennis team splits a pair of matches |

The Crook County High School girls tennis team split a pair of matches this week, falling to Bend 2-6 at home on Tuesday then defeating The Dalles/Wahtonka 6-2 on the road Thursday.
"Tuesday was a closer match than the score showed," said Head Coach Lloyd Rodgers. "It could have easily been 4-4 or even 5-3 us."
The Cowgirls lost a close match when Erin Crofcheck had to withdraw from her No. 2 singles match while leading, due to an injury and lost another close match when No. 3 singles Natalie Rich lost her third set in a tiebreaker.
Getting wins for the Cowgirls were No. 4 singles Cecile Suhr and the No. 2 doubles team of Maggie Trinchieri and Cassie Low who have had only one loss the entire season.
Tessa Romine also lost a tough match at No. 1 singles, losing her first set 7-5 to one of the top players in the district.
"Romine actually played very well," Rodgers said. "I thought that she could have won, but mentally she kind of took herself out of it after that close first set loss."
On Thursday, the results were totally different. The Cowgirls won most of the close sets earning the victory at The Dalles.
The Cowgirls won every match except for the No. 1 and No. 4 doubles matches on the day. Romine got things started off with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 1 singles match, while Crofcheck won her match 6-1, 7-5. Rich and Suhr also each picked up easy wins in their singles matches. In doubles play, Trinchieri and Low continued to triumph, winning their No. 2 doubles match 6-2, 6-1. No. 3 doubles team, Megan Bernard and Kristi Robinson, who have only been playing together for a couple of weeks, won their match 6-4, 6-1.
At No. 1 doubles, Krissi Kemper and Katie Leavitt lost a tough three set match 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 to one of the top doubles teams in the league
"We lost a heartbreaker at No. 1 doubles," Rodgers said. "Kemper and Leavitt played the best that I have ever seen them play. It was the match to watch. It was very entertaining and I have to give them a ton of credit. They felt good about their match even though they lost. They know that they can compete with them and that they can beat them on any given day, so their confidence level is up going into district."
The Cowgirls have one final match before district, playing a home match against Mountain View today beginning at 4 p.m., then they will travel back to The Dalles for district on Monday and Tuesday, May 5-6. |
