| Cowboys fall to Summit 22-12 |

| Crook County falls behind 19-0 in the second inning then scores 12 runs of their own |

The Crook County High School baseball team came out on the short end of a wild baseball game on Tuesday.
The visiting Summit team scored 10 runs in the first inning including two home runs by Jake Peters, and then scored nine more runs in the second inning to take a 19-0 lead. Summit ran their lead to 20-0 before the Cowboys finally got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Relief pitcher Cully Stafford came in during the third inning and pitched the rest of the game for Crook County limiting the Storm to just two runs in the remainder of the game.
"We've got to come out and play better at the start of ballgames," said Head Coach Chris Felton. "Our pitchers were hitting their spots and defensively I thought we played pretty well but Summit just drove the ball. We have got to find ways to be more consistent through seven innings of baseball, but I was very pleased that even though we were sitting down 19 runs the kids still continued to have great resolve and continued to take one pitch and one out at a time."
The Cowboys began to hit the ball themselves late in the game and scored 12 runs of their own before eventually falling 22-12 in six innings.
"The last couple of innings we drove pitchers out of the game and they had to bring in new pitchers which was something that they didn't want to do," said Felton. "I was pleased to see us manufacture some runs."
In addition to pitching most of four innings, Stafford also went two-for-five at the plate with a single and a double. Brett Gast went one-for-three with a double and Taylor Knox was two-for-two and drove in a pair of RBI's.
"We had guys that were getting on base and giving us opportunities to score and Knox had a couple of clutch hits with two outs and drove in a couple of runs," Felton said. "Those are things that we haven't been doing, so I was pleased with that."
Summit had 23 hits for the night with most of them coming in the first two innings while the Cowboys had nine hits of their own. The win moves Summit's record to 6-3 in the IMC while Crook County falls to 1-9 in league and 2-17 overall.
The struggling Cowboys travel to The Dalles/Wahtonka on Friday to play a doubleheader against the Eagle/Indians who are fighting for a playoff spot. The Eagle/Indians are currently in fifth place in the IMC with a 6-5 mark.
"We've got some fresh arms with our pitchers and hopefully we can carry our offensive bats into the game," Felton said. "They are a playoff caliber team that we would love to get a game from." |
