The Crook County High School girls golf team saved the best for last, qualifying for state as a team for the first time since 1992.
The Cowgirls shot their best score of the season on Tuesday during the second round of the IMC District Golf Championship, to widen their lead over third place Summit High School and earn a berth in the state championship.
"The girls really stepped up on Tuesday under much tougher conditions than the first day," said Head Coach Grant Patterson. "They played in a gutsy manner and really hung in there. The back nine was very tough. The wind was howling and it got a little cool on them. I was very proud of the Cowgirls."
Bend won the tournament, shooting a 676 for the two days while the Cowgirls shot a 706. Summit finished in third place 25 strokes behind Crook County.
JoBeth Hamon led the Cowgirl charge firing an (85-82) 167 which was good enough for sixth place in the tournament. Sarah Crofcheck followed her with a (90-84) 174 to finish tied for ninth place.
Pendleton's McKennon Cimmiyotti was the tournament medalist, firing a two-day total of 153, while Jenny Hilts of Bend shot a 157 to finish in second place.
The state tournament takes place on Monday and Tuesday, May 12-13 at the OGA course in Woodburn.
The first Cowgirl is scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Teams to watch for in the tournament include Bend, West Albany and Crescent Valley.
"If our girls can play as steady as they did at district they should be in contention for a trophy at state," Patterson said.
