| By Lon Austin The Crook County High School girls softball team guaranteed themselves at least a tie for second place and the second seed from the Intermountain Conference in the state playoffs with a 10-8 victory over Bend High School on Thursday. The win brings the Cowgirls' season record to 19-7 and 10-4 in the IMC, while Bend fell to 1-20 overall and 1-12 in league. Senior Kelsey Casey pitched all seven innings for the Cowgirls to earn the win on senior night. "It wasn't one of our better wins, but a win is a win," said Head Coach Tom Decker. "And you have to give Bend a lot of credit. They played us tough twice this year. They put up a fight." Crook County scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and looked to have control of the game, but the Lava Bears battled back and kept the game close to the end. The Cowgirls pounded out 17 hits on the night with Sydney Waite going four-for-four to lead the way. Kaitlyn Duncan also had a perfect night going 3-3, including a perfect bunt in the fifth inning. Other Cowgirls that had multiple hits were Brooklyn Walker (2-3), Santana Reece (2-4), and Sami Verity (2-4). Crook County is off now until the second round of the state playoffs when they play Glencoe High School on the road on May 20. Glencoe is currently ranked number one in the state in the coaches' poll. "We are looking forward to playing Glencoe," Decker said. "They were here scouting us tonight. It is a big challenge for us to go over there and play the number one team, but our kids are up for it. We know that we can play at that level so we are anxious to get over there and see what happens." |
