The Mitchell High School volleyball team opened their season in style on Saturday, knocking off the rival Spray Eagles.
“I’m excited,” said Mitchell head coach Sandy Goodson. “I think the girls did a great job.”
The Loggers were on fire from the service line in the first game of the match, hitting seven aces as they won 25-15.
After getting down early in the second game, Spray came charging back. The Loggers had a seemingly insurmountable 17-6 lead when Spray went on a tear, scoring the next eight points to get back into the match. Mitchell regrouped and went on to win the set 25-21. The third set was a different story as Spray led throughout, building an eight point lead. Mitchell rallied late, but the Eagles were able to hold on for a 25-23 win to extend the match to a fourth game.
The Loggers rebounded to make quick work of the Eagles in the fourth and deciding set.
Jenay Apperson opened the game at the service line and served the first 19 points of the match as Mitchell jumped out to huge lead.
After getting the big lead the Loggers relaxed, but still held on to take a 25-13 win and close out the match.
“I wish I could have served the whole game,” Apperson said. “But I’ve very pleased with the win over Spray. It’s a perfect way to start the season.”
Goodson was also pleased with how well Apperson and the rest of the team served in the final set of the match.
“They kind of fell apart in their serving during the third game,” she said. “I just told them that we needed to pay attention and get back into the game and focus. Once they did that they were set.”
With the win, the Loggers are 1-0 on the season while the Eagles dropped to 0-1.
Mitchell is back in action on Friday when they take on Jordan Valley, 0-4, in a High Desert League match. The match which will open the league season for both teams is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Spray.
