Loggers go 1-2 during weekMitchell falls to Central Christian and Harper, but defeat Huntington during busy week of actionOctober 04, 2012 The Mitchell Loggers struggled to a 1-2 record during a busy week of volleyball action. The Loggers opened the week with a non-league match against Central Christian (10-3). Mitchell jumped on top, winning the first two sets 25-21, 28-26, only to see Central Christian come back to win the next three sets 25-13, 25-19, 16-14 to take the five-set win. “It was very heartbreaking to lose to Central Christian,” head coach Sandy Goodson said. “Our serving fell apart in the third set and we just couldn’t pull it together.” Jenay Apperson, Farrell Fox, and Moesha Richer served well for the Loggers during the match, but it wasn’t enough as the remainder of the team struggled. Goodson also noted that Jordan Apperson and Miranda Holt did a good job blocking during the match. The Loggers played a league doubleheader on Friday, and things started promisingly enough as Mitchell swept the Huntington Locomotives (0-7) 25-22, 25-13, 25-22. “We kept on our toes and were able to work on playing as a team,” Goodson said. Richer, Fox, Sarah Tolton, and Laic Domenighini all had strong games in the win. According to Goodson, the Loggers also played well in the match against Harper. However, the Hornets (6-2) proved to be too strong in the end, taking a 25-20, 25-18, 25-14 win. “It was a great game,” she said. “The girls showed what it takes to hang with a more experienced team. We battled back and forth on every set. I think overall the team did a great job.” Miranda Holt, Jordan Apperson, and Tolton led the Mitchell offense, while Jenay Apperson, Brandy Titus, and Fox led the team at the service line. Goodson added that Domenighini had a great all-around game. “I think we are making great progress this year,” Goodson said. “We are hanging right with the teams that we lost to last year and not getting beaten in three sets by lots of points. I am very proud of the girls.” Mitchell is back in action today when they take on Adrian in a 4 p.m. match at Spray. Then the team is on the road again on Saturday when they take on Long Creek in a noon match and Ukiah in a 1 p.m. contest. |
