Total domination.

The Crook County Cowboys crushed the Bend Lava Bears 70-6 Thursday night in the opening Intermountain Hybrid Conference dual match of the season.

The Cowboys were in control throughout the contest, winning 13 of 14 individual varsity matchups as well as all 10 of the contested JV?matches.

“It’s always nice to have a dual before a big tournament,” said Crook County head coach Jake Huffman. “It’s kind of a warm up and gets kids down to the weight where they need to be.”

Huffman was referring to the 24-team Adrian Irwin Memorial Tournament which the Cowboys competed in on Friday and Saturday.

The win was made even more impressive because the Cowboys did not wrestle their normal lineup.

“We have some kids that are banged up or didn’t have the right matchups,” Huffman said. “So we gave some other kids some opportunities.”

Seven Cowboys earned falls in the varsity match, while nine of the 10 Cowboys to wrestle in the JV?match also won by fall.

Trey Shores (106 pounds), Terran Libolt (113), Colbran Meeker (138), Alex Urrea (160), Dean Smith (170), Gunner Crawford (195), and Curtis Crouch (220) all picked up pins for the Cowboy varsity, while Dawson Barber (152) earned a technical fall. In addition, Hayden Bates (132) and Michael Seyl (145) earned major decisions.

Other Cowboy winners were Taylor Shockney, a 6-2 winner over Kasey Beuschein at 126 pounds along with Austin Severance (120), and Jason Williams (285) who both won by forfeit.

The JV contest saw Cole Ovens (106), Tyler King (145), Brogan Howard (152), Clark Woodward (160), Kyle Ogbin (170), Aaron Swindle (182), Gunnar Robirts (195), Zach Smith (220), and Trevor Rasmussen (285) all pin their opponents.

“I thought that for the most part we stuck to the fundamentals pretty well,” Huffman said. “We thought that if we just stuck to the game plan things would take care of themselves and we felt like that happened.”

Although Huffman was pleased with the team’s performance at Bend he was already looking ahead to the Adrian Irwin Tournament.

“We’ve got to get back to work, but before we do that we’re going to go back and try to win the Adrian Irwin Tournament for the second time in a row,” he said. “It’s a highly competitive tournament with 24 teams including the defending 4A champs Cascade.”
