Robert Anthony Collins
December 28, 2012
Robert Anthony Collins was born August 7, 1916, in Condon, Oregon, to James and Lily Collins. He passed away peacefully at his home on December 21, 2012. Bob was raised on the Fopiano/Collins family ranch near Mitchell, Oregon. For his high school years, Bob and his brothers attended Canby High School in Canby, Oregon, where he graduated in 1934. Bob returned to the ranch which he continued to run with his brother, Jim, until Jim retired a few years ago.
Bob married the one and only love of his life, Ruth, on March 8, 1980, gaining a daughter, Jo Dee, in the bargain. His only son, Jim Bob Collins, was born the following year and became his instant sidekick whether working cattle, putting up hay, or just taking an afternoon to hike around to hunt for arrowheads. Bob thoroughly enjoyed the ranch and was proud of his cattle herd. One of the things he often mentioned in recent years was how lucky he felt that Jim Bob shared his love of the ranch and the country. Although he never fully "retired", he was proud to be able to hand the reins to Jim Bob in the last few years. Bob always said that people retire so they can go and do what they enjoy and he was already doing what he enjoyed so there was no point.
Bob was a charter member of the Mitchell Lions Club and a long time member of the Oregon Cattleman's Association. He was actively involved in community activities and events, quietly contributing his steadiness and gentle humor on all occasions. His presence will be greatly missed by a host of friends.
Bob is survived by his wife, Ruth, and son Jim Bob, of Mitchell; daughter, Jo Dee, of Stonyford, California; grandchildren, Kade Welty of Omaha, Nebraska and Catrina Welty of Pueblo, Colorado; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Jim Collins of Canby, Oregon and Paul Collins of Prineville, Oregon; sister-in-law Shirla Collins of Mitchell; seven nieces, four great-nieces, and one great-nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John "Jack" Collins, and one nephew.
Services were held on Saturday, January 29, 2012 at the Mitchell School gymnasium. The family is grateful for all the prayers and thoughts that have been expressed during this difficult time and has asked that those who wish to do so direct their memorial contributions to the Mitchell Volunteer EMT's, Hospice, or a children's charity of your choice.
