Big third quarter propels Loggers past White TigersMitchell girls use big third quarter to earn second winJanuary 10, 2013 The Mitchell Logger girls basketball team is on a roll. After not winning a game against varsity competition since 2010, the team has now won their second game in a row as they held on to defeat the Central Christian White Tigers 36-32 Tuesday night. “It was good to get another win and avenge our earlier loss to them,” said Mitchell head coach Tim Foster. “We didn’t come out with the best intensity, but for only practicing once since Dec. 20, I thought we fought through adversity really well and took control of the game.” The Loggers had lost 39-15 to the White Tigers prior to Christmas break. Nevertheless, Tuesday was a different story. Central Christian appeared to take control of the game in the second quarter as they ran out to an 18-13 halftime lead. However, this time the Loggers battled back. Mitchell outscored Central Christian 14-10 in the third quarter as they opened up a 27-22 lead. “We pressed a bit in the third quarter and that helped us create some turnovers and get easy baskets to get the lead back and create a little distance,” Foster said. Central Christian fought back and eventually took a 30-29 lead. That’s when Miranda Holt took over. Holt went on a tear, scoring eight of Mitchell’s nine fourth-quarter points as the Loggers held on to take the win. “It really was a total team effort,” Foster said. Holt finished with 12 points, leading the Loggers in scoring. Jenna Perry-Zapara added eight points, while Farrell Fox chipped in with seven. Holt and Jordan Apperson both came up huge rebounding with 12 boards apiece. Central Christian was led by Kaylin McAfee with 12 points, and Abigail Hannay with 10. With the win, the Loggers are now 2-6 on the season while Central Christian falls to 2-9. Mitchell is back in action Friday and Saturday in important High Desert League action.
