Terry D. Erickson

Terry Erickson, who grew up in the Clatskanie area and returned there in retirement, died Jan. 3 in a Portland hospital at the age of 65.
He was born Feb. 19, 1947 in Kelso to Ernest and Adeline (Saxton) Erickson of Quincy. He attended Quincy Grade School and graduated from Clatskanie High School with the class of 1965.
After high school, Terry enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1966 to 1968, including a year’s tour of duty in Vietnam in 1967. He earned his combat infantryman’s badge serving with C Company, 1st Battalion 8th Infantry, later moving to the 4th Infantry.
In March of 1974, Terry began his 24-year-long career as an Oregon State Police (OSP) trooper. He was first assigned to Hermiston, then moved to Prineville in October 1977, where he served as a senior trooper with the OSP Fish and Wildlife Division.
He was married to Sandra Hanson on Dec. 21, 1985. After Terry’s retirement they moved from Prineville to Clatskanie where they have resided since 2004.
Terry was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as quartermaster of Clatskanie VFW Post 2994. He was a 42-year member of Louis Larsen Post 68 of the American Legion in Clatskanie. He also belonged to the 4th Infantry Division Northwest Chapter, the Ore-gon Hunters Association, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the National Rifle Association. He was a 28-year member of the Prine-ville Elks Lodge, and also belonged to the Peninsula Moose Lodge and the Clatskanie Historical Society.
Terry enjoyed hunting, camping and clam-digging. He was a voracious reader, particularly of history and current affairs. He also was interested and involved in community service and veterans affairs.
He is survived by his wife Sandi of Clatskanie; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeremy and Kelly Hanson of Powell Butte, and Joshua and Karen Hanson of Pendleton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Dan Combes of Irrigon, and Lisa and Earl Connell of Boardman; his mother, Adeline Everman, Long Beach, Wash; a sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Craig Satalick, Spokane; a brother-in-law, Randy Hansen, Scappoose, and 10 grandchildren, Cody Connell, Jordan Connell, Branden Combes, Emma Combes, Harley Byram, Hadley Byram, Mario Hanson, Gage Hanson, Kellen Hanson and Zachary Hanson; nephews, Jeremy Satalick, Charlie Hansen and Willie Hansen; niece, Jenene Lang; two aunts, four uncles and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Erickson, and his father-in-law, Norman Hansen.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Clatskanie Middle/High School auditorium, 417 SW BelAir Drive, with Pastor Ron Jacobson officiated.
