Loggers fall to CougarsSecond quarter run propels Echo to easy win over MitchellJanuary 21, 2013 The Echo Cougars used their superior depth to pull away in the second quarter and take a 59-23 victory over the visiting Mitchell Loggers in Tuesday night non-league girls basketball. Led by the inside play of Miranda Holt, the Loggers came out strong in the opening frame. However, despite six points from Holt in the period, Echo was able to take a narrow 10-8 lead. Foul problems began to catch up with the Loggers in the second quarter as the Cougars began to pull away. “The girls played hard, but it’s tough to battle when you only have seven girls to start and two of those are playing through injuries,” said Mitchell head coach Tim Foster. “Throw in the foul trouble and things can get away from you pretty quick.” Echo took advantage of the opportunity, outscoring Mitchell 20-7 in the period as they blew the game open. Holt did her best to keep Mitchell in contention, scoring all seven of the Logger’s points in the period. Echo continued to pull away in the third period, outscoring Mitchell 18-2 to put the game out of reach. “To start the second half, they put more pressure on our guards and we weren’t able to get the ball inside as easily as we had,” Foster said. “We began turning the ball over and they capitalized.” Leading 50-17 at the end of the third quarter, Echo substituted freely the remainder of the game, yet were still able to outscore Mitchell 9-6 in the quarter. Holt finished with 17 points to lead the Loggers, while the Cougar’s Katelyn Elligson scored a game-high 25. “Echo is a great shooting team, and they showed it,” Foster said. With the win, the Cougars are 6-12 on the season, while the Loggers fell to 3-8. Mitchell is on the road again this Friday and Saturday when they take on the Ukiah JV and Monument/Dayville.
