Raymond Bell GuthrieFebruary 04, 2013 Raymond Bell Guthrie Raymond Bell Guthrie, 97, passed away Jan. 29, 2013 peacefully at his home on the farm in Prineville, Ore. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb.7, 2013 at Whispering Pines Funeral Home chapel Raymond was born Sept. 22, 1915 in Norton, Kan. to Fred and Jennie Guthrie. He moved with his family to Washington state in 1920. He grew up in Woodland, Wash. where he attended grade school. He then attended high school in Kalama, Wash., graduating in 1934. Raymond married Edna Tesch Aug.13, 1938 in Vancouver, Wash. They resided on a farm at Woodland, Wash. and in 1949 moved to Beaver, Ore. and built a sawmill and worked in the timber industry milling lumber. In 1954 they bought a ranch in Crook County and moved the family there in 1955. Here he raised his beloved quarter horses and later became interested in Belgian draft horses, showing at fairs and in parades. Because of his love for the draft horses and his interest in helping children he voluntarily took fourth graders from Ochoco Grade School on overnight covered wagon train trips for several years. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Assoc., Oregon Horseman Assoc., Draft Horse Assoc., charter member of Oregon Quarter Horse Assoc., Oregon Cattleman’s Assoc., member and past president of Grey Butte Grazing Assoc., and past member of Crook County Fair Board. He was also a 4-H leader for the horse club for many years, always ready to help a youngster learn about animals. In Raymond’s retirement years he and Edna kept busy enjoying short road trips, playing with his two draft mules and helping his two sons on the family farm. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Edna. His sons, William (Beth), Dan (Diana); and daughter, Gwendolyn Brown, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and two sisters.
