Cowgirl win streak ends with loss to StormSummit uses second-half three-point goals to take a 56-43 win
Dillon Dees goes up for a dunk during the Cowboys loss to the Summit Storm on Tuesday. Dees finished with 13 points. February 07, 2013 The Summit Storm used their long-range shooting to pull away late as they took a 56-43 victory over the Crook County Cowgirls in Tuesday night Intermountain Hybrid girls basketball action. “The game went real well for a while, then they made a run at us,” said Crook County head coach Dave Johnson. “They live by the three and die by the three and they were able to make some threes in the second half and pull away.” Summit jumped on top early in the contest, taking a 9-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Cowgirls battled back in the second quarter, outscoring the host Storm 12-7 to close to within a point at the half. Crook County continued their run early in the third quarter, taking a brief lead midway through the period. However, Summit’s Sarah Heinly suddenly found her shooting touch. The freshman guard hit three three-point shots in the period as the Storm outscored the Cowgirls 20-11 in the quarter to open up a 36-26 lead. The Storm continued to fire away from outside in the fourth quarter as they slowly pulled away. Heinly led the way for the Storm, finishing with 19 points, including four crucial three-point bombs. Kimmer Severance had a monster game for the Cowgirls, finishing with 21 points and 18 rebounds. Michaeline Malott was also in double-figures with 12 points. However, no other Cowgirl scored more than two points in the contest. “There definitely were times when we played great defense,” Johnson said. “We are going to keep working on getting better. Our goal is to keep improving and get ready for our play-in game.” Summit (14-5) hosts Redmond tonight while Crook County (9-9) hosts Mountain View in a 7 p.m. contest. The Cowgirls are at home again on Tuesday when they take on the Bend Lava Bears.
