Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours
Teresa Tooley business@centraloregonian.com February 11, 2013 Valentine’s Day is Thursday, Feb. 14, so Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours. The history of Valentine’s Day is unclear and over the years, the meaning has changed and different legends have been told. The roots to Valentine’s Day are said to have started in ancient Rome and was a festival of the Lupercalia-fertility celebration. Somewhere around 270 A.D., the facts regarding this holiday become more mythic and the legends surrounding the holiday begin. One account states the Claudius II prohibited marriage for younger men, because they made better soldiers than if they remained bachelors. Valentine would secretly perform marriage ceremonies and when caught, he was put to death. Yet another legend says that while imprisoned by Claudius, Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter, sending her a letter signed “from your Valentine” prior to his death. No matter which legend you choose to believe, modern day Valentine’s Day is a day in which young children exchange handmade or purchased cards with each other at school. As parents, we all have tucked away somewhere a card or handmade gift from our children that they painstakingly used their best penmanship to profess their love to “mommy” and “daddy”. I still drink coffee out of a cup most mornings while getting ready for work with large hearts and an “I love you” on it. Businesses in Prineville have their cards, chocolates, and other Valentine’s gifts out on display and several restaurants are gearing up for a busy Thursday night.
