Cowgirls fall to PanthersRedmond shuts down Crook County offense in 65-37 win
Jena Ovens goes in for a layup during a game earlier this year. Ovens finished with 11 points to lead the Cowgirls in scoring in their 65-37 loss to the Redmond Panthers. February 18, 2013 The Redmond Panthers dominated on the defensive end of the floor as they overwhelmed the Crook County Cowgirls 65-37. Crook County had won the previous two meetings between the two teams. However, on Friday night, there was no doubt who was the better team. The host Panthers rolled out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. Crook County tried to regroup in the second quarter, and their offense did look better for part of the period. Still, the Panthers outscored the Cowgirls 15-10 in the quarter to take a 29-17 halftime lead. The Panthers stepped up the defensive pressure in the third quarter, forcing numerous Cowgirl turnovers. Redmond took advantage of the opportunities, outscoring Crook County 16-4 in the period to put the game out of reach. The Panthers finished the contest with 20 steals, while the Cowgirls committed numerous additional turnovers. Leading 45-21 going into the fourth quarter, the Panthers began to substitute more freely, and still outscored the Cowgirls 20-16 in the period. Crook County was led by Jena Ovens with 11 points, while Kimmer Severance added eight and Maddie Lindburg pitched in with six. Kaylee Wilson and Chantel Dannis led a balanced Redmond attack with 11 points apiece. Shelby Bergum and Brittny Benson added nine points, while Kendall Current pitched in with eight points. Baileigh Baker also contributed to the Redmond win with six points, six steals, five rebounds, and five assists. With the victory, the Panthers raised their record to 10-13 while the Cowgirls fell to 9-13. Crook County travels to Redmond again tonight when they take on the Ridgeview Ravens in a 7 p.m. contest. The Cowgirls are home for one final contest on Friday when they host the Summit Storm. Crook County has already clinched a play-in game. However, the team will have to wait until after Tuesday night to see who they will play.
